During this time, she also pursued singing studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. After graduating high school in 1949, she dedicated a year to studying theater at the City College of San Francisco. Simultaneously, she participated in several beauty pageants, ultimately being crowned Miss San Francisco in 1951, followed by her entry into the Miss California Pageant.
Early Career
In 1955, Barbara made her television debut on “The Johnny Carson Show.” Following that, she appeared in various shows, including “The West Point Story,” “Highway Patrol,” “Private Secretary,” “I Love Lucy,” “The Millionaire,” “Target: The Corruptors!,” “Perry Mason,” “Father Knows Best,” “The Andy Griffith Show,” and “Route 66.” Her guest-starring performance in four episodes of “Burke’s Law,” where she played different roles, gained her further recognition. In 1957, she began her starring role in “How to Marry a Millionaire.”
After being discovered by director Mark Robson during a play where she appeared alongside James Drury, her film career took off when Robson arranged a screen test for her at 20th Century Fox for “No Down Payment.” Although she did not land the initially tested role, the studio offered her a contract, leading to a series of minor roles before securing a leading part in “A Private’s Affair” alongside Gary Crosby and Barry Coe. She later co-starred with Elvis Presley in the 1960 film “Flaming Star.”
