About Deontay Wilder’s Early Life

Deontay Wilder was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on October 22, 1985. He graduated from Tuscaloosa Central High School in 2004 with aspirations of playing football or basketball at The University of Alabama. However, after his daughter was born with Spina Bifida in 2005, he couldn’t pursue these dreams. Instead, he chose to attend Shelton State Community College to support his daughter. This sacrifice led him to give up his collegiate sports dreams. Overcoming a difficult period of depression and contemplation of suicide, he decided to focus on boxing. Remarkably, he only started training as a boxer at the age of 20 and quickly rose to prominence, winning the National Golden Gloves and the US Championships two years later. He even won a Bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, with an amateur record of around 30 – 5.

Deontay Wilder’s Professional Journey

At 23, Deontay turned professional in November 2008, winning his first fight by TKO. Throughout the following year, he won all nine fights in the first round. From 2009 to 2012, he achieved a 25-fight winning streak, all ending within four rounds.

His breakthrough professional fight happened on December 15, 2012, against the undefeated Kelvin Price, whom he knocked out.

From 2013 to late 2018, Deontay continued his winning streak with victories against notable opponents like Audley Harrison, Jason Gavern, and Chris Arreola.

Notably, on November 4, 2017, he defeated Bermane Stiverne in a first-round knockout. On March 3, 2018, he triumphed over Luis Ortiz in the

To defend his title in the 10th round, he received a career-high $2 million guarantee for the fight.

First Tyson Fury Fight

Arranged to fight British/Irish heavyweight Tyson Fury, Deontay had a 40 – 0 record. Tyson, who had previously defeated Wladimir Klitschko, faced personal struggles, rendering him medically unfit to fight due to a two-year binge.

In December 1, 2018, in Las Vegas, Tyson and Deontay squared off. Over 325,000 viewers paid for the Pay Per View. Tyson guaranteed $3 million, while Deontay was guaranteed $4 million. The shocking outcome of the fight being declared a DRAW left both fighters with over $10 million each.

On May 18, 2019, Deontay knocked out Dominic Breazeale in the first round. His earnings, from the purse and PPV, were expected to surpass $10 million.

Winning against Luis Ortiz for the second time on November 23, 2019, Deontay earned a base of $3 million and a guaranteed $20 million for the rematch.

Second Tyson Fury Fight

Scheduled for 2020, the rematch against Tyson Fury had both fighters guaranteed $28 million with a cut of 50/50 of the pay-per-view profits. Fury emerged as the champion with a seventh-round TKO on February 22, 2020.

Personal Life

Having 8 children, Deontay shares two daughters and a son with his ex-wife Jessica Scales-Wilder. Currently engaged to television personality Telli Swift, who appeared on “WAGS Atlanta,” he also has a younger brother, Marsellos, who is a professional boxer.
