Extensions

Banshee is designed to be easily customized with extensions, such as the Play Queue, Podcasting, and Last.fm support. Extensions can be enabled or disabled in the Preferences dialog under the Edit menu.

Banshee includes many extensions within the program itself, while others are created and packaged as part of the Banshee Community Extensions project. Additionally, anyone has the ability to create and share their own third-party extensions.

The following extensions are primarily developed by third parties, and are not officially reviewed by the core Banshee developers, though this may change in the future.

  • Banshee can be utilized as an alarm clock to wake up or drift off to sleep with your own music selection.
  • The Album Art Writer transfers album art from the cache to the folder housing the music files.
  • Ampache allows users to browse and play their remote music collection.
  • AppIndicator allows you to utilize the new application indicator area that is available in Ubuntu.
  • The command “Awn” sets the current album cover as the Banshee icon in the AWN (Avant Window Navigator) app.
  • ClutterFlow is a program similar to CoverFlow, which enables you to browse through your album collection.
  • The Cover Wallpaper feature allows you to set the current album cover as the GNOME desktop wallpaper.
  • FolderSync is a software that allows users to copy and synchronize music files from playlists into folders of their choice.
  • Jamendo offers over 20,000 albums available for download and listening for free.
  • Karaoke involves removing the singer’s voice from songs.
  • Last.fm Fingerprint allows users to automatically identify their music by utilizing the Last.fm online service.
  • Display track information on an LCD screen using LCDproc.
  • Lirc allows you to control Banshee using a standard infrared remote control, requiring LIRC.
  • Listen to Live Radio to explore different internet radio stations.
  • The feature “Lyrics” retrieves and shows the lyrics for the presently playing song.
  • Enjoy listening to streamed music from Magnatune.com.
  • The Mirage feature in this software offers playback shuffle-by-similar and Auto DJ fill-by-similar modes, which are based on songs’ acoustic similarity.
  • OpenVP creates visual patterns that sync with your music using the Open Visualization Platform.
  • Radio Station Fetcher retrieves radio stations from shoutcast.com and xiph.org.
  • Random By Lastfm allows users to shuffle their music library using information from the Last.fm online service.
  • Stream Recorder allows users to record internet-radio streams.
  • Telepathy allows users to browse their IM friends’ music libraries, download or stream tracks, and share their listening preferences.
  • Zeitgeist Dataprovider allows for the publication of Banshee activities into Zeitgeist.

Getting Banshee Community Extensions

The extensions listed above can be installed using one of the following methods.

  • The packages for Banshee extensions can be found in the same repository as Banshee. You can install them all by looking for the “banshee-community-extensions” package, or choose individual ones by searching for “banshee-extension-*” packages.
  • Source Tarballs
  • Instructions on obtaining and constructing it can be found on git.

Third Party Extensions

The extensions mentioned are developed by third-parties and are not endorsed or supported by the Banshee community. Banshee will have a community repository in the future, but for now, you must find and download the extensions yourself and install them in ~/.config/banshee-1/addins. Some extensions may also be available directly from certain Linux distributions.

Listening Post

This feature allows for the sending of email notifications when a track changes, with further information available.
