Born on November 26, 1966, in Saint-Marc, Haiti, Garcelle Beauvais is the daughter of Marie-Claire, a nurse, and Axel, a lawyer. After her parents’ divorce when she was 3, she relocated to the U.S. at age 7, accompanied by her mother and six older siblings. In Peabody, Massachusetts, Garcelle attended elementary school, knowing only Creole and French upon her arrival in the U.S. She picked up English by watching “Sesame Street.”

At the age of 16, Garcelle relocated to Miami to pursue modeling. In a 2015 conversation with the “Tokyo Journal,” she recounted, “I knew the lead girl in a Black is Beautiful commercial and I decided to drive to Fort Lauderdale without an appointment and see if the agency she was with would consider representing me. As I was driving, I stopped at a red light and put on lipstick while looking out the window at the mirror. Then this hand came in the car and startled me.
