Early Life

Giada Pamela De Benedetti, more commonly known as Giada De Laurentiis, was welcomed into the world on August 22, 1970, in Rome, Italy. She is the firstborn of actress Veronica De Laurentiis and actor/producer Alex De Benedetti, and she has three younger siblings: a sister named Eloisa, and two brothers, Igor and Dino Alexander II. Her grandfather on her mother’s side, Dino De Laurentiis, was a renowned filmmaker and also owned a restaurant known as DDL Foodshow. During her childhood, Giada frequently spent time in the kitchen, including in her grandfather’s eatery. Following her parents’ divorce, her mother relocated her and her siblings to Southern California, where they adopted her mother’s surname, De Laurentiis. In Southern California, Giada attended Marymount High School in Los Angeles and furthered her studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, graduating in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in social anthropology.

Television Career

After completing her college education, De Laurentiis relocated to Paris, France, to pursue studies at Le Cordon Bleu, where she initially aimed to become a professional pastry chef. Upon completing her training, she returned to Los Angeles and began working in various local restaurants, including Spago, managed by Wolfgang Puck. She subsequently transitioned to the role of food stylist, which is where she attracted the attention of the Food Network after styling a piece for “Food & Wine” magazine in 2002.

This eventually led to an opportunity from the Food Network to host her own show. “Everyday Italian” debuted on April 5, 2003. Initially, there was public backlash immediately after the show’s launch, as many viewers accused the network of hiring an actress or model rather than a qualified chef. Despite the criticism, neither the Food Network nor De Laurentiis was deterred, and in 2006, she began hosting “Behind the Bash,” produced by Atlas Media Corp., which explored the catering processes behind large-scale events like awards ceremonies. Continuing her momentum, her third show, “Giada’s Weekend Getaways,” premiered on the Food Network in January 2007.

De Laurentiis showcased her travels across various American cities, leading viewers to her preferred culinary spots. Featured cities in the program include Seattle, Washington; South Beach, Florida; San Francisco and Napa in California; and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Among the other programs hosted by De Laurentiis is “Giada at Home,” where she cooks and prepares meals in a set reminiscent of her own kitchen for family and friends. Additionally, “Giada Entertains” garnered a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Culinary Series on June 26, 2020. De Laurentiis has also received multiple accolades, such as the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lifestyle Host in 2008 and Outstanding Culinary Host in 2020.

Furthermore, she has made appearances on numerous shows, including a 2006 episode of “Iron Chef America,” where she competed against Bobby Flay, ultimately losing to Rachael Ray and Mario Batali. She starred in the two-part Food Network special “Giada in Paradise,” visiting Santorini, Greece, and Capri, Italy. De Laurentiis also served as a guest judge on the third season of “The Next Food Network Star,” an on-set mentor in the sixth season, and a regular judge in the seventh and eighth seasons. Additionally, De Laurentiis has ventured into voice acting, lending her voice to Paulette in the children’s animated series “Handy Manny,” the character Gelata in the US adaptation of the Disney special “Pixie Hollow Bake Off” (2014), and portraying a fictional version of herself in the animated feature “Scooby-Doo! and the Gourmet Ghost” (2018).

Later, in 2010, she teamed up with Target to unveil an exclusive kitchen supplies collection, which included stainless steel pots and pans, a variety of utensils, cooking tools, and a limited selection of food products such as sauces and pastas.

Additionally, De Laurentiis has established several restaurants. The first, GIADA, debuted in July 2014 within The Cromwell in Las Vegas, Nevada. The menu showcases California-influenced Italian cuisine, while the restaurant’s wine selection earned the 2019 Best of Award of Excellence from “Wine Spectator.” A special offering at GIADA includes “Book Club Brunch,” allowing guests to sample recipes from De Laurentiis’s cookbooks, with an option for cooking classes to learn how to prepare a four-course meal with GIADA’s chefs. For a more casual dining experience in Las Vegas, she launched her second restaurant, Pronto by Giada, at Caesars Palace in early 2018. The menu, reflecting the style of GIADA, features classic Italian dishes with Californian influences in a more laid-back setting. Her third establishment, GDL by Giana, opened in May 2018 within the Horseshoe Casino Baltimore in Maryland, presenting “a modern twist on traditional Italian dishes.”

From the end of 2015 onward, De Laurentiis has been associated romantically with TV producer Shane Farley.
