Background

Born on November 29, 1955, in Toronto, Canada, Howard Michael Mandel is the son of a real estate agent and lighting manufacturer. In his youth, he was known as the class clown and enjoyed playing pranks on family and friends. Expelled from high school for impersonating a school official to hire a construction company for an addition to his school, he subsequently worked as a carpet salesman. It was at the Toronto comedy club Yuk Yuk’s that Mandel began crafting his stand-up routine.

Professional Journey

Mandel secured a week-long gig as a featured act in September 1978, where he was described as “wild and crazy, borderline psychotic.” During the late 1970s, he traveled to Los Angeles, which led him to perform on the Comedy Store’s amateur night, eventually becoming a regular performer there. A producer from the syndicated comedy game show “Make Me Laugh” discovered Mandel during his set and invited him to make several appearances on the show in 1979 and 1980. In the summer of 1979, he opened for David Letterman.

His fame surged with a six-year tenure on the television drama “St. Elsewhere,” which began in 1982. While actively involved in “St. Elsewhere,” Mandel continued to pursue his stand-up comedy career and appeared in films, including voicing the character Gizmo in the 1984 movie “Gremlins” and its 1990 sequel.

In November 1985, he secured a booking on “Late Night with David Letterman.” His stand-up comedy performance was part of the Watusi Tour, showcasing his act in various cities. He also created and served as the executive producer for “Bobby’s World” (1990–1998), an Emmy-nominated animated series for children that aired for eight seasons on Fox before being syndicated.

During the 1990s, Mandel engaged in an array of projects, including guest roles in television shows, brief series, and cable comedy specials. In 1998, he launched his own syndicated talk show, “The Howie Mandel Show,” though it was canceled after just one season.

Beginning in 2010, Mandel became a judge on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” and also hosted the GSN Game Show Awards and the Primetime Emmy Awards.

In 2011, he took on the role of executive producer and host for “Mobbed,” a show that utilized hidden cameras and flash mobs to tell various true-life stories, which aired for one season. Following that, he hosted the hidden-camera prank show “Deal with It,” which debuted in 2013 and continued for three seasons.

Over the years, Mandel featured in numerous films, animated movies, and television programs.

He is recognized for his hidden camera segments on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” In 2004, he appeared as number 82 on Comedy Central’s list of the 100 Greatest Stand-Up Comedians of All Time.

He lives with ADHD and mysophobia, the latter being an intense fear of germs, which leads him to avoid shaking hands with others.

Mandel is also a distant cousin of the Israeli violinist Itzhak Perlman.

On September 4, 2008, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 2009, he received a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame.

Real Estate

In 2018, Howie Mandel acquired a ranch-style home valued at $2.6 million in the celebrity-occupied Hidden Hills community in the northwestern suburbs of Los Angeles. This single-story residence encompasses four bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, accompanied by a separate suite for guests or staff with an additional bathroom, spanning a little over 2,200 square feet. The property was sold with existing building plans for a significantly larger residence close to 10,000 square feet, and the newly constructed mansion is now owned by Mandel and his family.

A family trust owns the wife. Spanning over an acre, the three-story residence is probably an investment property. This six-bedroom, seven-and-a-half bathroom house features a custom kitchen, yoga studio, wine cellar, movie theatre, and an indoor-outdoor lounge complete with a wet bar. The expansive yard boasts a large patio that includes a living and dining area, along with a pool, spa, and vast lawn. In June 2020, Howie listed this property for $10.5 million and sold it in November 2020 for $9.5 million, with NFL player Jalen Ramsey as the buyer.

Mandel possesses another residence in Hidden Hills, a nearly 13,000-square-foot mansion that he custom-built on land he bought in 1999 for $650,000. In December 2023, he made the property available for rent at $50,000 per month.

He also owns a home in Calabasas purchased in late 2016 for $1.53 million, along with three contemporary condos in the same Santa Monica complex, acquired in three separate transactions from late 2013 to mid-2016, totaling $4.8 million.

In 2013, he sold his property on Malibu’s Point Dume for $7 million.
