Important Update Regarding Proposed Vape Tax in the UK
September 29, 2024
—
There has been news regarding a proposed tax on vaping products in the UK, recently discussed in the 2024 Spring Budget by the government. Scheduled for implementation from October 2026, this tax is aimed at discouraging vaping, especially among non-smokers and young individuals.
A consultation paper has been released by the government outlining the details of the proposed Vaping Products Duty (VPD). While recognizing the potential of vaping as a smoking cessation tool, concerns have been raised about its increasing popularity, particularly among non-smokers.
Current Updates
In response, the government has announced a rise in the prices of tobacco products to maintain vaping as a more financially viable option.
Deborah Arnott, the chief executive of Action on Smoking and Health, commented [1]:
“Increasing tobacco taxes is beneficial as ensuring that vaping remains a cheaper alternative to smoking is crucial in encouraging smokers attempting to quit to transition to vapes, known as the most effective over-the-counter smoking cessation aid available.”
Notably, Public Health England continues to advocate for the significant harm reduction potential of vaping compared to smoking [2]. Smoking is responsible for 7 out of 10 cases of lung cancer and is linked to various other cancers [3].
An expert evaluation based on the latest evidence indicates that e-cigarettes are approximately 95% less harmful than traditional tobacco products and can facilitate smoking cessation.
Public awareness of vaping-related risks was highlighted in a recent study conducted by University College London in February 2024, revealing that “Many smokers incorrectly believe that vaping is as harmful as smoking” [4].
