Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born on September 21, 1989, in Miramar, Florida, Jason Joel Desrouleaux comes from Haitian parents. He is widely recognized by his stage name, which phonetically represents his last name. Showing musical talent early on, he wrote his first song at the age of eight. During his teenage years, he penned tracks for other artists, including “Bossy” for the New Orleans rapper Birdman.

As a budding songwriter, Derulo contributed to projects for several artists like Diddy, Danity Kane, Donnie Klang, Sean Kingston, Casses, and Lil Wayne while working at Cash Money Records. To hone his skills in singing and dancing, he attended performing arts schools, such as The American Musical and Dramatic Academy, and participated in theater productions like “Ragtime” and “Smokey Joe’s Café.” After appearing in the musical show “Showtime at the Apollo” and winning the grand prize in the 2006 season finale, music producer J.R.
