Early Life

Born on May 28, 1945, in Berkeley, California, John Cameron Fogerty grew up in El Cerrito with four brothers and middle-class parents. John has recounted an incident in which he wet himself due to being denied bathroom access during class, leading him to switch schools after a year. By fourth grade, his parents, who Fogerty claims struggled with alcoholism, divorced.

After a few more school changes, Fogerty met the future members of CCR while at El Cerrito High School. During this time, he began taking guitar lessons from Barry Olivier. John and his older brother Tom formed a band with fellow students, which eventually evolved into CCR. Despite signing with Fantasy Records, the band initially struggled to achieve commercial success.

In 1966, Fogerty received a draft notice for military service in the Vietnam War. Upon receiving the notice, he visited a United States Army Reserve recruiter, enlisting as a supply clerk. The specifics surrounding his ability to join the reserves rather than serve in Vietnam remain unclear; however, John suggests that the recruiter may have dated the paperwork in a manner that made it seem like his acceptance into the reserves occurred prior to the draft’s activation. John completed his training in 1967, resulting in his discharge in 1968.

Career

John Fogerty’s music career truly gained momentum after his military service. In 1968, his previous band rebranded as Creedence Clearwater Revival and launched their debut album. The hit single “Susie Q” created a buzz, paving the way for subsequent successes with albums such as “Bayou Country.” Additional hits included “Have You Ever Seen the Rain,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Run Through the Jungle,” and “Fortunate Son.”

CCR was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, yet the group was only able to stay together for four years. The band’s split in 1972 stemmed from ongoing conflicts, with Fogerty at the center of the discord. He felt entitled to increased creative control as the lead singer, lead guitarist, and principal songwriter. After Tom’s departure from the group in 1971, Fogerty attempted to maintain unity among the remaining members, allowing them equal songwriting and vocal contributions, which culminated in their final album, “Mardis Gras.”

Post-split, John Fogerty ventured into a solo career. Instead of releasing an album under his own name, he introduced his debut solo album as a group called “The Blue Ridge Rangers,” of which he was the sole member. He followed this with “John Fogerty,” his second solo effort. Unfortunately, both albums did not achieve significant success, and the situation did not improve with the release of “Hoodoo.”

Real Estate

In November 2002, John acquired a 16,000-square-foot mansion in the hills of Beverly Hills for $2.9 million. He sold this expansive estate for $18.6 million in March 2014.

In 2008, John purchased a more modest property in Beverly Hills for $1.385 million, likely as an investment. The house, featuring 1,920 square feet of living space, was rented out at one point for $5,400 per month. In 2015, he sold this property for $1.475 million, yielding a profit of nearly $100,000, in addition to the rental income he had made.

In 2013, Fogerty spent $8.95 million on a 22-acre estate in Hidden Valley, California. This property includes an 18,600-square-foot mansion equipped with pecan floors, five fireplaces, and a wine closet. Amenities also feature a 12-car garage, a saltwater swimming pool, and beautifully landscaped lawns adorned with fountains. He listed this estate for $20 million in July 2023.

During summer 2013, Fogerty and his wife also placed another Beverly Hills residence on the market for around $23.5 million. This property offered about 13,000 square feet of living space and was sold a year later for $18.6 million to auto finance mogul Don Hankey and his wife Debbie.

In 2018, Fogerty and his wife acquired a home in Encino, California, for $6.75 million. Subsequently, they listed this mansion for sale in March 2021 at just under $9 million, ultimately selling it for $8 million to actress Hailee Steinfeld. In October 2023, John acquired a residence in Hidden Hills, California, for $17 million, with Sylvester being the seller.
