Early Life

Born on February 17, 1963, in Pawnee City, Nebraska, Daniel Lawrence Whitney, widely known as Larry the Cable Guy, grew up on a pig farm. His parents were Tom Whitney, a Christian minister, entertainer, and guitarist, and Shirley Whitney. In the late 1970s, Larry attended The King’s Academy in West Palm Beach, Florida, where his father served as the principal of the elementary school. After a transfer to Berean Christian School in West Palm Beach in 1980, he graduated there in 1982. Larry pursued further studies at the Baptist University of America in Georgia and the University of Nebraska—Lincoln, focusing on drama and speech. Ultimately, he left college after his junior year to follow a career in comedy, drawing inspiration for his Southern accent impression from his college roommates from Texas and Georgia, which became pivotal in shaping his Cable Guy character.

Beginning in the early 1990s, Larry launched his career with various radio guest appearances.
