Early Life
On April 22nd, 1990, Richard Colson Baker was born in Houston, Texas. He grew up with parents who were missionaries, leading to frequent relocations with his family. His childhood included living in various countries such as Germany and Egypt, as well as multiple states in the US. Eventually, after his mother departed from the family, he and his father settled in Denver.
During his teenage years, Baker faced bullying and defended himself through poetry. This struggle ignited his passion for rap, prompting him to craft his own music. When his father left to serve in the Army in Kuwait, Baker moved into a neighbor’s basement and began experimenting with substances. It was in this period that he produced his first mixtape, Stamp of Approval. His decision to drop out of school eventually led his father to bring him to live in Kuwait.
Career
Upon returning to the United States and completing high school, Baker persuaded an MC manager to assist in launching his music career. At this juncture, he adopted the stage name “Machine Gun Kelly,” inspired by his rapid-fire delivery style. He began performing at local venues and quickly made an appearance at Harlem’s Apollo Theater, along with a spot on MTV2’s Sucker Free Freestyle. Following that, he released his second mixtape, 100 Words and Running. Although he was gaining visibility, financial difficulties persisted; he was evicted by his father, became a parent himself, and took a job at Chipotle for support.
A significant breakthrough occurred with the release of the single “Alice in Wonderland,” which garnered him various accolades and heightened his profile prior to his mixtape, Lace Up. A notable track was dedicated to the Cleveland Cavaliers, featured at their home games. Following that success, MGK worked with Juicy J on the single “Inhale.” In 2011, Sean Combs signed MGK to Bad Boy Records.

In 2012, MGK was set to unveil his debut studio album, titled Lace Up. This album featured popular tracks like “Invincible” and “Wild Boy,” along with collaborations from artists such as Tech N9ne, Twista, and DMX. That same year, he worked alongside various musicians including Pusha T and Meek Mill to produce a mixtape called Black Flag. Following some delays, MGK released his second studio album, General Admission, by 2015.
The collaboration with Camila Cabello resulting in the hit single “Bad Things” came in 2016. MGK’s feud with Eminem escalated in 2018, a situation that had begun years earlier when MGK commented on Eminem’s daughter being “hot” in a tweet. After Eminem discovered the tweet more than a year later, he responded with a diss track targeting MGK. Their feud intensified, leading Eminem to prohibit MGK from appearing on his online radio station. One of MGK’s well-known diss tracks aimed at Eminem was 2018’s “Rap Devil.”
In 2019, MGK released his fourth studio album, Hotel Diablo, which included the singles “I Think I’m Okay” and “Glass House,” debuting at number 5 in the charts. He also mentioned that his upcoming album, Tickets to My Downfall, would feature collaborations with Travis Barker, slated for a 2020 release. The studio album Mainstream Sellout followed in 2022.
Acting
Films featuring MGK include Beyond the Lights, The Land, Bird Box, The Dirt, and Big Time Adolescence. Additionally, he made appearances on MTV’s Wild ‘n Out. In 2022, Machine Gun Kelly took on the role of “London Clash” in the self-directed film Good Mourning.
Personal Life
Kelly has a daughter, Casie, born in 2009 from a previous relationship with Emma Cannon.
He has been romantically linked to models Amber Rose and Sommer Ray. In May 2020, he started a relationship with actress Megan Fox, and by January 2022, Fox announced their engagement. Reports emerged in May 2023 indicating that the couple was on another “break.”
Real Estate
MGK began renting a newly constructed house in Sherman Oaks, California, in early 2020, with a monthly rental fee of $30,000.
In April 2022, he acquired Logan Paul’s previous mansion in Encino, California, for $7.5 million. Logan had purchased the property in October 2017 for $6.55 million and attempted to sell it for $8.5 million. The mansion, covering 30,000 square feet and featuring 14 rooms, underwent extensive renovations by Paul shortly after he bought it in 2017.
