Rob McElhenney’s Early Years

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, saw the birth of Rob McElhenney on April 14th, 1977. His mother, Helena McElhenney, worked as a nurse, while his father, Robert McElhenney, held various roles. McElhenney attended Saint Joseph’s Preparatory School, a private Catholic high school in Philadelphia.

After high school, McElhenney briefly studied at Temple University before opting for an acting career. He relocated to New York City, worked as a waiter, and auditioned for acting gigs, landing minor roles in films and TV shows.

His interest in acting blossomed during his teenage years, leading to school play performances and some commercial gigs. In the late 1990s, he starred in an anti-smoking PSA that garnered attention.

The Success of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”

At 25, McElhenney moved to Los Angeles and connected with Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day, conceptualizing a show based on their experiences in restaurants and bars. This led to the creation of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” a sitcom about self-absorbed friends running an Irish bar. The trio shot a pilot with a $200 budget, leading to its selection by FX.

Debuting in 2005, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia became a critically acclaimed hit, earning numerous awards. While the show demands much of McElhenney’s time, he still takes on additional acting projects, including guest appearances in series like Lost and Fargo. Following its 2002 renewal, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia became the longest-running live-action comedy in US television history.

In 2020, McElhenney starred in and created the Apple TV+ series Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet, delving into the video game industry. He also served as co-creator and executive producer for the 2022 show Welcome to Wrexham, a sports documentary on the Welsh football club, airing on FX.
