Early Life

Born on October 9, 1975, in New York City as Sean Taro Ono Lennon, he is the child of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and he has a half-brother, Julian, from John’s prior marriage to Cynthia Powell. Elton John stands as his godfather. After Sean’s birth, John stepped back from music to focus on parenting, but tragically, he was murdered by Mark David Chapman when Sean was only five years old. Sean attended schools in Toyko (kindergarten), Switzerland (Institut Le Rosey), and New York (Ethical Culture Fieldston School and Dalton School). Following high school graduation, he studied anthropology for three semesters at Columbia University before opting to leave to dedicate more time to music and touring with Yoko.

In 1981, Lennon contributed to Ono’s “Season of Glass” album, and in 1984, he performed “It’s Alright” for the Yoko Ono tribute album “Every Man Has a Woman.” During his formative years, he earned production credits on his mother’s albums “It’s Alright” (1982), “Starpeace” (1985), and “Onobox” (1992). At 16, he co-wrote the song “All I Ever Wanted” with Lenny Kravitz, featured on Lenny’s “Mama Said” album (1991), and later collaborated with Kravitz to cover John’s “Give Peace a Chance.” In 1988, he appeared in the Michael Jackson film “Moonwalker.”

Career

Lennon was invited to tour with Cibo Matto as their bass player in 1996, later becoming a full band member and contributing to Butter 08’s self-titled album in 1996 as a guest performer. Through his work with Cibo Matto, Sean released “Super Relax” (1997) and “Stereo ★ Type A” (1999), which eventually led to a record deal with the Beastie Boys’ Grand Royal Records. In 1998, he released his solo album “Into the Sun,” followed by the EP “Half Horse, Half Musician” in 1999 and the album “Friendly Fire” in 2006. In 2001, during the televised tribute “Come Together: A Night for John Lennon’s Words and Music,” he performed “Across the Universe,” “This Boy,” and “Julia.” After the closure of Grand Royal Records in 2001, Sean signed with Capitol Records, releasing albums like “Mystical Weapons” (2012) and “Crotesque” (2013) with the band Mystical Weapons. In 2015, he teamed up with Les Claypool to form The Claypool Lennon Delirium, producing albums “Monolith of Phobos” (2016), “South of Reality” (2019), and the EP “Lime and Limpid Green” (2017).

In 2018, Sean recorded a cover of John and Yoko’s”Miley Cyrus and Mark Ronson, along with a trio, performed ‘Happy Xmas (War is Over)’ during the December 15th episode of ‘Saturday Night Live.’ Sean Lennon has served as a producer on several albums, including Soulfly’s ‘Primitive’ (2000), Plastic Ono Band’s ‘Between My Head and the Sky’ (2009), ‘Take Me to the Land of Hell’ (2013), Lana Del Rey’s ‘Lust for Life’ (2017), and Black Lips’ ‘Satan’s Graffiti or God’s Art?’ (2017). Personal Life

At the 2005 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Sean met Charlotte Kemp Muhl; however, due to her being just 17 at the time, they maintained a friendship for two years before entering into a romantic relationship. Together, the couple formed the band The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger in 2008. They have released several albums through their record label, Chimera Music, including ‘Acoustic Sessions’ (2010), ‘La Carotte Bleue’ (2011), and ‘Midnight Sun’ (2014). ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine recognized ‘Midnight Sun’ as one of the top 50 albums of 2014. From 1996 to 1999, Lennon played a role in organizing and performing at the Tibetan Freedom Concerts, and in 2013, he participated in an online concert to benefit the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace. In October 2011, Sean took part in the Occupy Wall Street protests, and the following year, he launched the ‘Artists Against Fracking’ campaign, writing an op-ed for ‘The New York Times’ titled ‘Destroying Precious Land for Gas.’

Real Estate

In 2008, Lennon acquired a property in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village for $9.5 million. In early 2015, Sean faced a lawsuit for $10 million from his neighbors, Addie and Gary Tomei (who are the parents of actress Marisa Tomei), claiming that a tree on his land had disrupted their home’s foundation, damaged their stoop, and caused ‘irreparable damage to the structural integrity of the building.’ In September 2016, a judge ruled that Lennon must remove the 60-foot-high, 70-year-old Ailanthus tree.
