Early Life
On November 30, 1977, Steven Hiroyuki Aoki was born in Miami, Florida, to parents Rocky Aoki and Chizuru Kobayashi. His family moved to Newport Beach, California, during his childhood. His father, a former Japanese wrestler, is the founder of the Benihana restaurant chain. Aoki has two older siblings, a sister named Kana and a brother named Kevin, along with a half-sister, Devon Aoki. He completed his high school education at Newport Harbor High School in 1995. Later, Aoki attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he obtained two Bachelor of Arts degrees, one in Feminist Studies and the other in Sociology. While in college, he organized underground concerts out of the Santa Barbara Student Housing Cooperative, where he resided.
Career
Steve Aoki gained significant popularity on college campuses through relentless touring. He typically performs around 250 shows annually. During the Deadmeat Tour in the spring of 2012, he headlined over 55 cities within 60 dates across both the United States and Canada.
In 1996, Aoki established his record label, Dim Mak Records, which is named after his childhood hero Bruce Lee’s fighting style. Besides being a DJ, Aoki is also known as a club promoter. He has created remixes for numerous artists including the Jackson 5, Drake, Kanye West, Eminem, The Killers, Lenny Kravitz, and Snoop Dogg. His first studio album, “Wonderland,” was launched in 2012, followed by “Neon Future I” in 2014 and “Neon Future II” in 2015. Additionally, his album “Steve Aoki Presents Kolony” debuted in 2017. One of his most notable singles, “A Light That Never Comes,” features Linkin Park. In 2018, he released “Neon Future III.” On September 9, 2019, “Let It Be Me” was introduced by Aoki,

Steve Aoki married Tiernan Cowling, his long-time girlfriend from Australia, in Hawaii in 2015 after being engaged for five years.
An avid gamer, Aoki was announced as a participant in the Warzone Royal Ruckus in 2020, a charity event featuring top gamers, athletes, musicians, and influencers playing Call of Duty to support the Equal Justice Initiative. This organization aims to eliminate mass incarceration and unjust punishment in the United States, tackle racial and economic injustices, and safeguard basic human rights for society’s most vulnerable members.
