Early Life

Born on November 22, 1950, in Winthrop, Massachusetts, Steven Lento grew up in a family with Italian heritage. His mother later remarried a man named William Brewster Van Zandt, leading Steven to adopt his stepfather’s surname. At the age of seven, he moved with his family to New Jersey.

Learning guitar at a young age, Steven drew inspiration from early performances by the Beatles and Rolling Stones. By 14, he formed his first band, the Whirlwinds. Despite its short lifespan, he quickly established another band, the Mates, and joined a third known as the Shadows in 1966. During this time, he faced disciplinary action for having long hair, which ultimately required his mother to persuade the school for his return. He graduated in 1968, all while sustaining serious forehead scars from an auto accident that led to him crashing through a windshield; to conceal these scars, he commonly wears hats or bandanas.

Musical Career

In the early stages of his musical career, Steven met Bruce Springsteen at a New Jersey club, leading to a friendship. Later, he would perform alongside Springsteen in bands such as Steel Mill and the Bruce Springsteen Band. While holding a construction job throughout the early 70s, Van Zandt remained committed to his musical aspirations. After touring with The Dovells, his penchant for wearing Hawaiian shirts during winter months led to the nickname “Miami Steve.”

OverOver the next few years, bands such as Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, along with The Miami Horns, were founded by Van Zandt. In 1975, the latter group shared the stage with Bruce Springsteen, which eventually led to Steven securing a place in the E Street Band. Bruce later acknowledged Van Zandt’s contribution in crafting the iconic guitar line for the song “Born to Run.” As the E Street Band embarked on global tours, Steven assumed the role of lead guitarist during those years.

In 1984, claiming his mission was accomplished, Steven departed from the E Street Band. He expressed that his joining the band was solely to assist Bruce in achieving fame and success, and with that goal realized, he felt no need to remain. Nonetheless, when the band reunited on a regular basis in 1999, Van Zandt made his return. Since that time, he primarily played as a background rhythm guitarist instead of a lead guitarist.

He ventured into a solo career, debuting with the album “Men Without Women,” which received widespread acclaim, followed by his next album, “Voice of America.” However, despite the critical applause, Steven’s solo career did not yield substantial commercial success.

Acting Career

In 1999, the acting journey of Steven Van Zandt began when he was invited to audition for “The Sopranos.” After noticing his speech at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, series creator David Chase encouraged him to audition. Steven originally tried out for the role of Tony Sopranos, but HBO expressed reservations about casting an unseasoned actor in such a pivotal role. As a solution, Chase crafted a new character specifically for Steven, allowing him to be a part of the series.

This character was Silvio Dante, serving as a “consigliere” or “captain” in a fictional New Jersey crime family known as the Sopranos. He played a crucial role throughout the series’ duration. Today, “The Sopranos” is regarded as one of the finest television series ever created.

Real Estate
