Born Theodor Capitani von Kurnatowski on March 19, 1980, in Covington, Louisiana, Theo is the son of Roland Theodor Achilles von Kurnatowski (who died in 1996) and Gina Capitani. He has an older brother and two younger sisters. During a 2018 interview with “The Press-Enterprise,” Theo reflected on his upbringing, stating, “Humor is a free currency not everyone can have. Growing up poor, it was the one thing I could control. I couldn’t control money, but I could control if I was funny.” After graduating from Mandeville High School, he pursued higher education at various institutions, including Louisiana State University, Loyola University New Orleans, College of Charleston, University of Arizona, and Santa Monica College, ultimately receiving his degree from the University of New Orleans in 2011.

He shared that his journey to sobriety began when he arrived at a radio interview after a night of cocaine use and found himself unable to communicate. Reflecting on that day, he stated, “The main gift that God had given me was my voice. And I couldn’t even use it because I’ve been up all night just using drugs to feel good somehow, or using drugs to feel anything.”
During the same show, former MLB player Darryl Strawberry, who had been sober for 13 years, prompted Von to recognize the need for change in his life, leading him to attend AA meetings. He remarked:
“I sat down and listened to people tell stories – which were my favorite thing to hear. My whole life I’ve been loving stories, man. I love your story. You know, whatever your story is I love it man because all my life when I was young I just wanted a different story.“
Real Estate
In March 2021, Von acquired a 4,918 square foot home in Nashville, Tennessee, for $1.645 million. The previous owner, former Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason, purchased the property for $1.095 million in 2014. Additionally, he owns an apartment in Los Angeles, California.
