Between 1983 and 2011, Tom amassed $445 million in movie salaries. From 2011 to 2019, he is estimated to have earned at least another $300 million, bringing his total career earnings between 1983 and 2019 to $745 million.

Top Gun Salary/Earnings
In 1986, Tom Cruise’s salary for “Top Gun” was $2 million, equivalent to around $5.4 million today after adjusting for inflation. Surprisingly, $2 million represented 13% of the movie’s total $15 million budget. The earnings of his co-stars, like Kelly McGillis and Val Kilmer, remain undisclosed but were presumably a fraction of $2 million.
Amidst filming Top Gun, another movie starring Tom, “Legend,” performed poorly at the box office, causing concern for producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson. Thankfully, Top Gun became a blockbuster, raking in $360 million in revenue and claiming the top-grossing spot of 1986.
Jumping ahead to 2018/2019, a sequel to Top Gun was eventually produced due in large part to producer David Ellison of Skydance, who has been passionate about the project since founding the company. Tom Cruise, the star and primary producer of the sequel, earned a base salary of $13 million for Top Gun: Maverick. Additionally, he stands to receive 10 – 20% of the film’s “first dollar” gross revenue, a unique deal in Hollywood. This revenue is disbursed after theater splits but before other studio costs.
If Top Gun: Maverick reaches $1 billion in box office earnings and Tom owns a 10% share of first dollar gross, his earnings could reach $60 million. With a 20% share and future streaming revenue, Tom could potentially earn around $200 million, a remarkable increase compared to his original Top Gun salary.

Personal Life
Tom has been married multiple times. He wed actress Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990, and it was during this marriage that he was introduced to Scientology.
His marriage to Nicole Kidman lasted from 1990 to 2001.
He was in a relationship with Katie Holmes from 2006 to 2012.
Katie Holmes Divorce Settlement
Tom and Katie, who share a daughter named Suri, entered the marriage with disparate net worths – $250 million for Tom and $10 million for Katie. Tom’s significant assets led to a firm prenuptial agreement. The divorce settlement mandated Tom pay child support of $400,000 yearly for 12 years (until 2024), totaling $4.8 million. He also covers Suri’s various expenses. Katie has full custody of Suri and has chosen not to raise her with Scientology. Notably, Katie waived spousal support to obtain complete custody and control of their daughter’s upbringing.

Real Estate
Tom has owned a range of impressive properties across the US over the years. In 2013, he sold a New York City condo for $3 million and in 2015, a Hollywood Hills property for $11.4 million to Eva Longoria. His Beverly Hills estate, acquired for $30.5 million in 2006, was sold to Leon Black for $40 million in 2016. Tom invested $11.8 million in a Clearwater, Florida condo near the Church of Scientology’s headquarters in 2018.
In the 1990s, while married to Nicole Kidman, Tom constructed a mansion in Telluride, Colorado, featuring 320 acres, a 10,000-square-foot residence, seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms, stables, and a helipad. His lobbying efforts contributed to expanding the local airport runway. Despite several listing attempts with prices ranging from $59 million to $39.5 million, the property finally sold in May 2021 for its last asking price. Cruise/Wagner Productions
One key factor contributing to Tom’s immense wealth is his involvement in producing his films. In 1993, he and Paula Wagner co-founded Cruise/Wagner Productions, which has generated a global revenue exceeding $3 billion to date. This production company has played a pivotal role in Tom’s financial success. In 2006, after Tom’s controversial statements about psychiatry and anti-depressants went viral and ruffled feathers around the industry, their company’s exclusive deal with Paramount dissolved. Since then, funding has been provided by hedge funds and Washington Redskins founder Dan Snyder. United Artists recruited Paula and Tom in 2006 to revive the struggling studio and although Paula left UA in 2008, she and Tom still own 30% of the studio.
